How to make friends

Do you remember the first time you went to school? Or started a new job? Or moved to a new place?  How did you feel?

Picture this - you have just arrived in a new country (let's say Mexico).  You are an anglophone with no notion of the Spanish language, let alone the particular iterations of the versions spoken in the city.  You settle into your new home but of course you cannot be shut up in your cocoon forever.

You set a tentative foot out your door. Walk to the nearest grocery (tienda de abarrotes or misceláneas) and point out the items that you would like to purchase.  After a bit of song and dance, you triumphantly emerge with your prized possessions.  Two days later - rinse, repeat.  After a few more visits, you discover that you have picked up the (Spanish) names of the things you buy most often.  And guess what? You now have at least one acquaintance.

When does an acquaintance move into the friendship zone?  You be the judge.
